Natural Home Remedies for the Common Cold

Feeling under the weather can be frustrating. I am someone who will try every natural remedy before opting for pharmaceuticals. I strongly believe that when we are sick, it's a way our body is trying to talk to us. When I overwork myself, I become stressed so my body creates inflammation. When my body is inflamed the immune system is compromised and it causes me to become sick! I used these tips and tricks to reduce inflammation and strengthen my immune system. Check out my tips below (in no particular order).

  • Apple Cider Vinegar and Lemon Juice: Make a large batch of fresh squeezed lemon juice and apple cider vinegar and keep it in the fridge. I always just do equal parts AVC to lemon juice. Then, 3x a day (before each meal) put about 2 tbsps of the mixture in a cup and fill the rest of the cup with warm water. This will help detoxify and boost your immunity.

  • Hot Water with Lemon and The Honey Bee Doc Honey: About 3x a day, make yourself a big mug of hot water, add in the juice of 1/2 lemon and 1 tbsp honey.   • Bone Broth: I picked up a bottle of bone broth at my local grocery store and made a big bowl of vegetable soup with it. I sautéed some onion, celery, carrots, mushrooms and bell pepper. Then I added the broth, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, basil, parsley, turmeric, cayenne pepper, rosemary and juice of 1 whole lemon. If you don't want to make the soup, just warm up the bone broth and drink out of a mug!

  • Drink Kombucha: Kombucha is a probiotic and will help boost immunity. My favorite brand is: Humm because its low in sugar.

  • Gargle Salt Water: Boil some water, and add some salt. Mix it up and gargle it before bed. You can even put it up your nose (ouch, but I do it), and it will help clear your nasal mucus.

  • Eat Foods High In Vitamin C: Oranges, grapefruits, green peppers, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, kale, cantaloupe and kiwi.

  • Anything with Turmeric and Ginger: If you're lucky enough to have a juicer, juice yourself a few fruits and veggies with turmeric and ginger.

  • Lots of Water: Flush it out with constant drinking of water (yes, you will have to pee a bunch. But wouldn't you rather get rid of the bug?).

  • Lemon: Eat a lemon like you would an orange. Yup, do it. My best tip yet.

  • Diffuse Peppermint Oil: If you have a diffuser, just moisten the air with a little peppermint oil, which will help with clearing congestion.

  • Change your toothbrush: If you have an electronic toothbrush, change the head. If you use a regular toothbrush, bust out a brand new one.

  • Take a Warm Bath: Take a warm bath and let the air moisten your nasal path! If you have bath salts that contain peppermint, eucalyptus and lavender, add them in!


These may be common sense, but in case we need a reminder...

  • Ditch the physical exercise: It's not going to diminish your progress to take 2-3 days off of the gym. Refrain from excersize and let your body rest.

  • Get lots of sleep: If you're an active person, this may be hard for you. But cancel your plans, call off work and sit infront of the TV and binge on some Netflix. You probably got sick from not getting enough rest in the first place (I know I did). If you need some extra help getting to sleep with that stuffy nose, try Melatonin!

  • Wash your hands: Like a lot, to the point where they are dry. I always put on some lotion afterwards to sooth that dryness.
